Scaling any kind of cluster membership protocol beyond single digit thousands is currently a hard problem with Cluster Membership protocols we have today.
Even in the single digit thousands 1k-5k you are going to have to have a team of folks that meticulously attend to your ETCD/ZK/cluster membership service.
Finally discussions of wanting to go beyond this size, rarely talk about failure domains. Do you really want failure domains of 50k nodes, probably not.
I’m super happy to be proven wrong here, but if you are supporting 10k nodes in a single cluster you probably have a SOSP paper to write just saying...
