Seems to be confirmation of third country tariffs being applied to all UK exports into EU under WTO rules - 45% of exports

What on earth is going on? Majority of Whips Office (not the Chief), Cabinet ministers Fox, Cairns & Mordaunt and Brexit ministers Kwarteng & C H-H seem to have defied own three line whip on the Statutory Instrument to extend Article 50 - all abstained.

Gavin Williamson no recorded vote too - apparently no pairs tonight, but some would have been given slips, and clearly vote passed on Labour votes anyway BUT 93 Tories voted against too.

I reported that at Cabinet on Monday there was a demand for free vote on SI too....
Blimey less than HALF Conservative MPs voted for a Three Line Whip on extending A50 UK law legal date SI - something they were told would cause deep legal problems. Just 150 voted for, 93 against, rest abstained. Passed on Labour votes....

This is about new leadership for phase 2.
Seems to me that PM is making it conditional on having to get through phase 1 that her general message it is
price she is prepared to pay and that the message of her team is that “this is national interest above personal interest”

EU Commission announces this morning it has 'completed' its no deal planning and warns it is 'increasingly likely that the United Kingdom will leave the European Union without a deal on 12 April'.
Commission says no deal 'will obviously cause significant disruption for citizens and businesses' and 'the EU will be required to immediately apply its rules and tariffs at its borders with the UK' [including in NI]. 'These controls could cause significant delays at the border.'
Commission says Brits travelling to the EU would 'be subject to additional checks when crossing borders into EU'. It says despite 'considerable preparations at ports and airports to ensure that these checks are done as efficiently as possible, they may nevertheless cause delays'.

Some MPs talk about “no deal” as a great liberation. “No deal” actually means total supplication, handing huge control over the UK to the European Commission.

Read the government’s technical notices on no deal, and you will find that an awful lot of sectors will need a decision from Brussels to keep trading.

Agriculture: the UK is “confident” that its products of animal origin meet the EU’s import requirements for third countries, but the EU has not formally listed the UK products as such. If it doesn’t, no exports of animal products to Europe.
