You know who won on economic anxiety? Hillary Goddamn Clinton.

She won voters making <50k/yr. Including whites. She won voters who said the economy was their top concern.

Trump won whites making >50k/yr, and voters whose biggest concern was immigration or terrorism. Xenophobes.
Trump won* on a different kind of anxiety- the fear of “my kind of people” losing their place in the social hierarchy.

There’s absolutely an economic component to that. A social leg up is an economic leg up. But economics aren’t the driver.
“He won on economic anxiety” is a myth that whitewashes the bigotry of middle and upper class white people. It’s an insidious form of white supremacist propaganda with old roots. There’s no legitimate reason for anyone on the left or the press to repeat that bullshit.

Barr’s memo is – blatantly and predictably – a bad faith “summary” of the Mueller Report. But a lot of the press is taking it at face value. It’s ridiculous. And I think it’s important to understand why that keeps happening. So here’s a stab at it.
My short answer is that the mainstream press has a comfort zone, and they were desperate to return to it.

The fact that a candidate sought out and received illegal help from a rival government, and now occupies the White House, is completely outside their comfort zone.
(Brief pause for some #NotAllJournalists nuance. Plenty of reporters and pundits have shown a dedication to the truth. We wouldn’t know a lot of what we know if it weren’t for them. This thread is for the Chuck Todds, David Brooks and NYT headline writers of the world.)

Attorney General Barr made the case against charging Trump with obstruction before he was nominated as AG. His hasty decision to let Trump off the hook doesn't exonerate Trump -- it casts a cloud of doubt over his presidency.

Both Barr & Rosenstein had compelling reasons to recuse themselves from the obstruction case. Barr had already attacked the case; Rosenstein's conduct was part of the case.

But instead, they took it upon themselves to go *beyond* Mueller's findings.

Within 48 hours of receiving the report, Trump’s hand-picked attorney general, Barr, and deputy attorney general, Rod Rosenstein, let Trump off on obstruction charges — something that Mueller wasn’t ready to do after 22 months of reviewing the evidence.

NEW: In newly-declassified FISA materials, the FBI said it believed Russian efforts to interfere in the 2016 election "are being coordinated with" Carter Page, "and perhaps other individuals" associated with President Trumps's campaign.
The FBI told us earlier this year that it had never before released a FISA surveillance request. Today, we have more than 400 pages of materials of formerly top secret documents seeking permission to monitor Carter Page.
