Lifehack: We do “in bed” for our kids 30 minutes before “lights out.” They can read in their beds for those 30 minutes. This helps them wind down as well as making reading a treat that they look forward to, and so far seems to be instilling in them of love of reading in general.
Follow up answers to peeps questions (in thread so everyone can see).
1. It’s good to start this by reading to them every night before they can, and then a transition period of some time with you reading and some with them looking through their fav picture books.
2. We let them read whatever. You want them to enjoy it. They’ll eventually move on to better stuff if they learn to love reading. One of ours often reads joke books, amazing but true books, etc. Putting rules on it IMO will drain the freedom/joy.
3. In our house, for our 7 & 9 year old, reading is at 7:30 and light out 8. The 12 year old can read usually till 9:45. I share this because I feel most people don’t realize how much sleep kids should actually be getting. Do some research. It’s prob more than you think. 😴 🛌
