Question to all:
In UX 'dark patterns' are defined as designs that prod users into making choices that aren’t in their best interest, but benefit the company.

If I asked you to go beyond interface, and consider dark patterns up & down the stack, what would be your fav example?

Time traveling to 1948 to discuss Edward C. Tolman's "Cognitive Maps in Rats and Men" for my last and final thread for @kwassum's course on instrumental conditioning. JMO, Tolman was ahead of his time, thumbed his nose at McCarthyism, and was a Learning Theorist bad@ss. #scicomm
In his studies of learning in rats, Tolman sought to demonstrate that the mechanisms by which rats (and humans) learn to maneuver through the world involve robust, flexible, autonomous and selective mechanisms that form a cognitive-like map in the brain.
Tolman's ideology was quite different than the rival theory of the day that favored a stimulus-response (S-R) reinforcement-driven view where learning was an automatic response triggered by environmental stimuli. (Tolman pictured all by his onesies on the right 👇).

Now I'm not saying this is a guaranteed way to make people treat you like some elite, high class person - but implementing these strategies will do wonders in improving how you, as well as others see you.
1. Learn more skills with a high return on investment (ROI).

High ROI skills are the 20% of work that will bring you 80% of the the results, even though you should spend way more than 20% of your working time doing such.

Now high ROI skills can be tricky to pinpoint exactly.
For example, my current fields of work are dropshipping, copywriting and local business lead generation (as well as another business I'm setting up). High ROI work for me is:

-Cold outreach.
-Market Research.
-Creating and analyzing advertising.

We shrug off #DataPrivacy because we think it's basically inconsequential to our real lives. But the impact of #CambridgeAnalytica just began to be felt in 2015 and spread to 50 MILLION or 1 in 6 Americans.

Spent the weekend thinking about how a few projects I've come across recently are doing UX theatre, not actual user-centered design. Sadly, it's becoming more prevalent as execs learn the term UX but their teams aren't empowered to do all the work that UX entails.
People pepper their presentations and project charters with claims of user-centered design, but don't talk to users, don't mine data for user insights, don't validate assumptions with users, don't test prototypes or even existing apps/ services/sites with users...
No actual users are involved at any step in the process. But we *think from a user perspective* as in, we role-played using assumptions we made about user behaviour based on our own experiences with the tool.
