We shrug off #DataPrivacy because we think it's basically inconsequential to our real lives. But the impact of #CambridgeAnalytica just began to be felt in 2015 and spread to 50 MILLION or 1 in 6 Americans.

The panoply of ways Trump used his cachet w/ billionaire supporters like the Mercers should concern everyone, including those on the right & left who just eyeroll these investigations as about #HillaryClinton when that's tangential to our national security & honest elections.

This is a serious question, because the investigative work I am doing is crucial, the interviews I am doing are with people whose voices are often suppressed & the issues are ones that get little attention.

I realize this is a problem for many journalists, not just me, so....?
Last month I did a big piece on #lungcancer among women and another on #familicide. One got massive attention, the other, very little.

I am interested in feedback.
I know few people read articles, but we write them for you.

During the Obama years I often met colleagues for drinks on Fridays.
There was plenty of news then: a recession, two wars, drone warfare, immigration issues, more.
But the president himself was calm, controlled & not driven to telling lies that caused domestic or foreign crises.
I miss that time specifically because I was able to do more in-depth work, focus on long-term issues for the country.
There was not daily crisis reporting sucking up all the time and energy of reporters.
Stories didn't go stale in one news cycle.
People read more than headlines.
I'm not whining--just commenting.
I miss having the flexibility of taking a weekend away from news.
None of us can afford that, now.
Not reporters nor the rest of America.
Because Trump is so unstable, a long lunch can put you out of the loop.
We say this a lot, but: NOT NORMAL.

I spent weeks interviewing poor people in America's poorest big city where nearly 30% live in poverty and another 12% in deep poverty.

I'm more concerned about people going hungry in my own neighborhood than a moment of incivility.

"In November, a U.S. Census report found that while the percentage of food-insecure people decreased nationally in 2017, it increased in Philadelphia — to nearly 25 percent of city residents."

I am very excited for 2018. I hope it is a year where we go past the headlines (and often short term outrage) and get to the real stories and impact beyond that.
#metoo was such an incredible story this year. The headlines were taking down truly bad actors at the top. To me the real story was how many people came forward at all levels to share their stories of harassment. Next year will be eliminating this behavior at all levels
Bitcoin, ICOs, and cryptocurrency are another case where the headlines of rising prices and riches are pervasive. But the real story for next year is the beginning of true impact of new technology changing the way transactions and trust happen. Can’t wait!
