Lots of great things happened out of the #wg5 yesterday for Early Career Public Historians in Academia. Here are a few thoughts that came out our curriculum discussion. Things were flying too fast to tweet on the fly yesterday. #ncph2019
In undergrad #publichistory classes where you can't feasibly pull off a real project, having students produce project proposals, grant applications, and other prep documents helps them think through many of the logistics of doing PH work. #wg5 #ncph2019
If you develop a good structure for implementing PH projects in your classes, you can rotate out content and community partners within that structure to be more efficient. #wg5 #ncph2019
We briefly discussed possibilities for other formats of courses like 1-credit skills-based courses, proseminars, 2-semester long classes linked together, team-taught classes etc. @rizzo_pubhist and @malgorzatar could reflect more on this perhaps (love these ideas!) #wg5 #ncph2019
things that were repeated in both #s50 and #wg5 #ncph2019 were reflections on the different investments in undergrad and grad PH classes. If we're teaching a bunch of these, how can we implement projects in multiple classes? Do grad classes get precedence?
.@rizzo_pubhist noted that finding Digital Archives that can be the basis of a project better accommodates grad students who work traditional 9-5 day jobs #wg5 #ncph2019
(apologies in advance for everything that is unattributed or potentially misattributed, y'all)
Asserting, “MY JOB IS AS YOUR PROJECT MANAGER” and communicating we’re a team, I want to listen to your ideas, but at some point I’m going to make a decision helps frame the collaborative role of faculty and students #wg5 #ncph2019
AASLH has a fantastic technical leaflet on writing 100-word exhibit labels, resources like these were well-loved by some of our discussion group. #wg5 #ncph2019
A key point of our discussion was talking about what REALLY is the goal of an undergraduate PH class -- teaching everything and every subfield and All Of The Things? Or reframing and teaching students to be critical consumers of PH content in the world #wg5 #ncph2019
I find this idea so much more freeing than the belief that we have to do EVERYTHING in this class. We also talked a lot about getting students to think about the ethics of public history work throughout the semester of this course. #wg5 #ncph2019
