The student of languages in me loves this thread by Lambda School employees explaining why they work at Lambda School, in several languages they didn’t grow up speaking.
(Language learning is, relevantly to Lambda School’s interests, an existence proof that it is possible to teach a difficult skill to an adult learner and that universities are absolutely rubbish at this despite having departments dedicated to it.)
(No, seriously, only about ~10% of majors in non-Western languages who are not heritage speakers achieve sufficient proficiency to function in a business environment, at the US’ best schools.)

Lambda School is one of the best engines for distributing opportunity on the Internet, which is maybe one of the best meta-engines for distributing opportunity.
I am in dumbstruck awe of this company.
(In no small part because they do the hardest part of Starfighter, the part that I was utterly unsuccessful in doing, with the difficulty setting tweaked to hard mode... as an implementation detail like 5th down the list of worthy hard problems. And make it look easy.)

I am taking a day off in near future and will uncharacteristically have writing bandwidth. ("That's a weird day off." Literally my hobby, and don't worry, Factory Town still going to happen.)

Anything in particular you'd like to hear about?
Factory Town, by the way, is my favorite factory optimization game, a very niche genre that is probably underplayed by people who follow me. It is a great entry point into this genre.

Don't play it if optimizing conveyor belts sounds like work; do play it if you diagram for fun.
Another great game in the genre is Big Pharma, which has similar aesthetic but very different early-game gameplay and very different late-game gameplay. Also, Big Pharma cares *a lot* more about its point-of-view on healthcare than Factory Town does on maximizing efficiency.

Getting a number of emails from Japanese firms which are girding for The Ten Consecutive Days Off (weekend, workweek, weekend, Monday) as if it will be a societal calamity.

(Golden Week, an annual observance, is slightly longer this year due to a combination of factors.)
Said emails include a bank worrying that retail currency conversions between JPY and USD may become unreliable due to a lack of counterparties, a worry which... seriously, does the bank have literally no one who understands how any of this works?
I mean yes the proverbial Watanabe-san will probably pull her liquidity but that is one of the world’s most important currency pairs which has a) deep, deep fundamental demand in both directions daily and b) practically every institutional counterparty in world happy to step in.

1/ This is a thread on code-switching. It’s not intended to be a commentary on any specific controversy, just a clarification of how people might be using “code-switching” in different ways, b/c some folks seemed curious . . . . .
2/ First: many prob already knows this, but just to be clear: Languages are collections of dialects. There is no “correct” English/Spanish/etc. dialect. The “standard dialect” is determined by those in power. And no one really ever speaks *the* standard, just variations of it.
3/ So, for ex, my dialect/accent is from AK. It's not "the standard," but some might consider it "closer" to the "standard" than other dialects.

“Non-standard” dialects are discriminated against, despite the fact that they are no less systematic & rich than “standard dialects.”
