Can’t see how Government can “attach” a confidence vote to a Meaningful Vote - fixed term Parliament Act is very prescriptive about the wording of any motion - must be “That this House has no confidence in Her Majesty’s Government.”...
Versions of this could be:
Govt promises time for a confidence motion - would need to do so if Oppo tabled one anyway.

That the Government tables a conf motion in itself - weird.

PM promises to resign if it gets voted down - not sure that will help get the votes, or be believed
FTPA - passed for one PArliament without thinking of risks of sustaining long zombified future Govt..canny Lords asked for sunrise clause. Compromise was a long forgotten review next year.

If Govt still here surely has to advocate its repeal.. having put that in 2017 manifesto,

No further third reading amendments in the Lords - the Cooper Letwin Bill amended at Committee stage - will complete Lords stages in next 15 minutes and then head over to the Commons for consideration of those Lords amendments alone.
NEW: Cooper Letwin Bill has now passed through the House of Lords - amended twice by Lord Pannick and Lord Goldsmith... now to the Commons for consideration of the amendments:

Amended Cooper Letwin Bill (v short as you can see) completes passage in Lords and is then carried through the Lobby over to the House of Commons - where Government according to Tory MPs is about to accept the amendments

NEW: Order to hold European Parliamentary elections has just been laid in Parliament: "Day of Poll order" makes it legal for local returning officers to prepare for the elections now due on 23rd May. Govt says they are not "inevitable" though

Some thoughts on the Labour Front Bench’s support of an Art50 extension until 30th June and their stated policy of wanting a General Election and then to renegotiate the Political Declaration.

TL:DR - I think it’s bogus. A con-job. There isn’t possibly time.
1/
Say there was a vote of no confidence next week and it was won. Let’s say Thursday. The Fixed-Term Parliament act then requires a pause of 2 weeks for the vote for parties to try to form a majority. That takes us to 11th April.
2/
Say no majority is found. It normally takes 8 weeks to organise a General Election. That takes us to 6th June, by which time, if UK has not organised European Parliament elections, a further Art50 extension will be extremely difficult to obtain. 3/

Couldn't sleep so wrote a list of things that aren't normal, do add.

1/ Last night 118 Conservative MPs voted against the flagship policy of its own government.

It's the largest defeat in history for a Prime Minister but she didn't resign in fact she'll win its confidence today
2/ Because the "gentleman's agreement" of pairing was suspended in acrimony last year a pregnant MP had to cancel a c-section that would've allowed her to give birth to her child. Instead she was wheeled down a corridor in a chair to pass her body through a door in order to vote
3/ The Government is going back to Brussels to renegotiate a withdrawal agreement the EU has said they won't negotiate over anymore but the Government has no choice because the non-negotiable agreement wasn't agreed upon by Parliament because MPs agreed they didn't like it.

The key concept here is 'confidence'. A government stays in power by having the confidence of the House of Commons. Meaning that it has a majority to pass its business. Losing a vote of confidence means they've 'lost' the House and by convention a General Election is due

The #Brexit deal vote is for all intents and purposes a vote of confidence. It is what the Tories have said themselves their government is all about achieving. It's been their excuse for neglect of other areas of policy, like social care. It is a "big set piece" vote.

BREAKING: Labour motion agreed. It’s not absolutely everything we wanted - but it’s close!

Lots of good things:
- Labour will vote AGAINST any deal that fails to meet the 6 tests in full
1/
- labour will not accept No Deal (so that means McCluskey’s bonkers idea of a ref between Tories’ Deal and No Deal is off the table)
- full participation in single market (not sure if that means IN single market but sounds pretty damn close)
2/
- no hard border in Ireland (there was a bit about “for goods, services or people” at one stage but that seems to have been removed)
- vote down May’s deal, call vote of no confidence and then GE (highly unlikely labour can force this because if Fixed Term Parliament Act)

Anyone want a thread on what in the actual hell is going on in the UK ‘government’ right now? Here we go.....
It took Cabinet 18 months to agree on what Brexit should look like. Entire government has been consumed with Brexit and held hostage by hardline Brexiteers in the Tory party
Cabinet agreed on a soft-ish Brexit last weekend (some freedom of movement and goods). Also soft is Overton Window stuff as 2 years ago, we’d have labelled the plan extreme and hardline

Quick thread on UK politics.
Help me out here. Parliament clearly doesn't want a cliff-edge Brexit, but Brussels may make that the only choice, other than a very soft Brexit (which the EU thinks is the only solution to the Irish border issue). 1/9
But what happens if parliament votes to yield to the EU, and soften Brexit; and then refuses to boot the government out in a confidence motion? Every outcome seems implausible. 2/9
First and easiest solution: Theresa May stays on and negotiates Brexit on parliament's terms. But it seems really difficult for that to happen. It would be like David Cameron staying on to deliver Brexit in 2016. 3/9
