What if we were clamoring to build a table along the border instead of a wall? We could all come to dinner every night, from each side. Can you imagine the incredible happiness of that potluck? Can you imagine the human celebration? All the delicious freely given food and love?
All the kids running underneath it, happy and playing? All the recipes exchanged?
All the spontaneous storytelling.
All the empathy.
The realization that we are all one family, in the desert, thing to survive.
And the immediate understanding that generosity is more important than anything you have.
Bury your greed in the ground next to you. Bury your selfish and narcissism. Bury your nationalism, your patriotism, your pride, the box you keep your identity in. And pass the hot sauce.
Now, understand, please, that the table is already there. Take your seat. Bring your friends. What are you bringing to dinner? What will you offer, out of hope, love and understanding for the future of our planet?
You’re invited.
But first you’ll have to cross all the borders you harbor within.
And hurry up please, dinner’s ready.
