Fact: 84% of members of Congress have leadership PACs, including 99 out of 100 current senators and 348 out of the 432 sitting House members (including ~35% of House freshmen whose terms began in January)
Leadership PACs are concerning because they allow donors to legally contribute significantly more than they can to politicians’ campaign committees, presenting them with another avenue through which to gain even more access and influence with lawmakers bit.ly/2F0Kbp4
Moreover, some members of Congress use their leadership PACs to subsidize lavish lifestyles — meals at fancy restaurants, trips to luxury resorts, rounds of golf at elite clubs, etc., as @IssueOneReform & @CampaignLegal detailed last year bit.ly/2TqXgMn
Some politicians even use leadership PACs to pay for expenditures — such as dues payments and clothing — that would likely be considered illegal if campaign funds were used to pay for the same things
The good news is there is growing bipartisan interest in curbing the misuse of leadership PACs. The Political Accountability and Transparency Act (#HR679) would, among other things, prohibit politicians from using leadership PAC funds for personal use bit.ly/2FXEVnm
