So Shazam was fun. Not great, but fun. Which is about as much praise as I can offer a DC film. I'm all in on them having no house style and doing this alongside some bleak shit like the Joker. That seems the best place for them.
One thing held it up for me: I didn't not believe for a fucking second that Billy Batson was Shazam. Like not even a tiny bit.
The day before seeing it I watched Moonlight which is, er, a very different move. But actually it has the exact same process in it: young weedy guy changes into massively bulked up older version.
But fuck me, Moonlight nailed it. His features, and his expressions, felt immediately like the same character, even though he had completely changed. Such an art to getting that right. Shazam didn't have it, not in the script, the casting or the acting.
