North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said the country needed to become more self-reliant “so as to deal a telling blow to the hostile forces who go with bloodshot eyes miscalculating that sanctions can bring the DPRK to its knees.”
The DPRK leader didn’t specify what he meant by ‘telling blow,’ but he did underscore the need to “more vigorously advance socialist construction” to support the “national economy suited to the specific local conditions of our country based on our efforts, technology & resources”
Last month, North Korea’s Vice Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui said Kim was weighing his options and could decide to pull out of denuclearization talks with the US and end his more than 16 month suspension of missile and nuclear testing.
Kim’s speech did not rule that out, but the main theme was on fortifying a self-reliant economy. KCNA reported Kim made a  “scientific analysis of the changed international landscape and the peculiarities of the present situation.”
South Korean President Moon Jae-in is scheduled to meet with US President Donald Trump at the White House on Thursday. North Korea’s rubberstamp parliamentary gathering known as the Supreme People’s Assembly was also scheduled to meet Thursday in Pyongyang.
