The only measure of whether Assange "deserves" something is what he's actually charged with, which is in this case conspiring to help Manning hack computers.

If you think he deserves to be jailed for "hacking" because he did something else, then you've got it wrong.
Conversely, if you think he deserves NOT to be jailed for hacking, because he's a journalist, because he's fighting the Man, then you also have it wrong.
I personally don't like this charge. It sounds like something that can entrap well-meaning cybersecurity professionals. While he may be technically guilty, I wonder if the DoJ would prosecute normal people for it if they weren't notorious like Assange.
