Just so we are clear on basic notions of how words and actions are connected: when someone with a big platform cynically distorts another person's words in order to whip up rage against them it's called "self-serving propaganda that sometimes inspires violent action."
Not a perfect parallel, but consider this radio interview from 1963 w/ a member of the terrorist group called the White Citizens Council of Jackson, MS. These civic leaders wanted black "troublemakers" now known as "civil rights activists" to be murdered.
When these upper-middle class "respected" men said these words on the radio in 1963, a black activist had been murdered by their fellow segregationists in Greenwood just a few months earlier. They knew this & were happy about it. But, by golly, they never *said* it should happen!
According to these domestic terrorists (also known as the "leading Christian men of Jackson, MS") they were just defending "the American spirit" and "the integrity" of the nation against "dangerous, radical threats" to America like black people who wanted to vote.
This is the historical lineage in which Dan Crenshaw and the President he's defending have placed themselves.
