There are times when people misunderstand my work and say so in places where I am guaranteed to see it. But Death of the Author means I wince, look sad, and don't say anything to them directly, because...
If that misunderstanding was even POSSIBLE, it's entirely on me. Authors can put things into our work that we didn't realize were going to be there. We are products of the cultures and times and yes, prejudices that raised us.
We all have -isms and -phobias to unlearn. I came out of the closet at fifteen. I still had internalized homophobia to unlearn. I have been a woman all my life. I still battle internalized misogyny, just like everybody else.
You don't have to be perfect. You just have to be better today than you were yesterday. That means you're still not as good as you'll be tomorrow.
