THREAD: Think BIG to win BIG.
I participated in a strategy session with the leaders of one of the most innovative companies in Africa this weekend.

I took away 3 key lessons.
1. Think BIG.
There are two ways to build a big business. You either solve a small problem for a large number of people or a big problem for a few well-heeled individuals. These guys build simple solutions for a large number of people.

Choose one model and perfect it.
2. Embrace complexity.
These guys strategically focus on the most challenging problems in their industry to domesticate.

For instance, they have a new project that combines software + hardware + data science + building tech to deliver education to vulnerable students.

Amazing!
3. Learn, learn, learn!!!
I spent a lot of time with the CTO of the business and noticed that he spent most of his spare time reading a book about software optimization.

He is already one of the best developers in this region but is still committed to improving his craft.
Finally,

The world needs more welders and data analyst and already has enough barbers and fashion designers.

Solve complex problems and you will be able to name your price.

3 things about starting a new business.

1. Don't ever start big.
Even if you have the funds to go big. Start small and scale rapidly.

2. Don't stray too far from your area of competence.

3. Start with 1 business model, in 1 market, with 1 unified mgt structure.
Business planning is great but it's impossible to game plan all possible failure scenarios.

Starting small gives you the opportunity to fail "small" before you achieve scale.

You can quickly rise again if you fail "small." Big failures are tougher.
All businesses experience failures.

Even the most strategic businesses fail at some products:

1. Apple Lisa
2. Google+
3. Facebook Workplace
4. Windows Phone
5. Amazon Fire phone.

Start small to domesticate the market. Then scale rapidly afterwards.

I am sincerely shocked that so many people think it's OK to yell at customers if they "deserves" it.

Is it OK to yell at your subordinates if they make mistakes? What about your spouse? Younger siblings?

There is NO excuse for either physical or verbal abuse.

None whatsoever.
When you feel the impetus to yell at an unreasonable customer, just assume for a minute that you're running an international business.

You will lose your job (on the spot) if you're rude to a customer in an intl business.

Control yourself, smile, and ask how you can be of help.
I once fired a lady from my company and she went on to join another company that hired me as a consultant.

She decided that the best way to show me she's the new boss is by being rude and obnoxious.

I told my people, "Remember, she's the client. She pays our salaries."

Nobody can ever say for sure if the Shamantaka Mani, the Diamond of Vishnu Purana, Mahabharata and Bhagavata, is Kohinoor. There are assumptions of that nature.

#Thread based on witness accounts of 6 girls (my roommate's sister & friends) reached my one room home in morning who were present in protests:

1) Protest was completely peaceful. We were shouting slogans such as "Awaaz do hum ek hain", "Tiranga humara hai, Modi Awara hai", 1/n
"Modivaad se azaadi", "We want justice". No anti Hindu slogans were raised. We just wanted to march to parliament.

2) Jamia doesn't have a union, student president etc, we never do protests like JNU. Yet when JNU, DU protests, no one enters their campuses, but they entered ours!
Is it because we are a Muslim university? (This is been said by Hindu girls by the way).

3. The police beating us in protests were in jeans and Tshirts, wearing anti riots gear. We don't even know if they were police or miscreants. Just like miscreants may have entered protests
