It feels like civilization could collapse because there’s a threat of society collapsing. This whole thing could fall apart and it’s the most tragic thing imaginable.
This isn’t hyperbole. It’s not just reaction to Notre Dame, although that fire makes a potent metaphor. There’s a real and persistent threat to liberal democracy and Enlightenment principles. That’s what’s radiating today.
Believing our institutions will survive simply because they’ve survived isn’t enough. They can go up in smoke any day, any time. It’s happened before, and we have to be cognizant of that.
