With AMP, google has wanted nothing more than a complete take over of loading news to you.

They can also then deny people from being AMPed. Which can then be used to take you out of certain news feeds.

This is about control, under the guise of optimization.

#JustSayNoToAMP
Now they want to remove one of the only ways an average user would ever know they were on an AMP page... the URL.

And they are pretending this is the "real" version of the site as intended by the webdev.

Forget this #JustSayNoToAMP
AMP is an unneeded intrusion into the web publishing ecosystem, as an attempt to try and compete and take over publication from Facebook

( ^^ read the whole thing, though. ^^)
Even the most understanding of folks express very real concerns about Google keeping you in their ecosystem, never leaving the dysptopian fiefdom that Google is building

ampletter.org
And now? NOW they want to pretend you are still in the publishers ecosystem when you click around their site AFTER you visit an AMP page.

This is fucking awful.
They straight up want to just click hijack you, ensuring that you are loading things from google servers, and ensuring you are ensnared in tracking and scheming and digital data hording.

No opt-in for the users. Just google.
Even someone who believes they have good intentions feels like this is a bad thing for the ecosystem.

Because it fucking is.

And they have the utter GALL to pretend that taking over the users address bar so they no longer are aware they are on AMP is a good thing.

This is another step towards control of loading your own content to people who requested it.

And they can absolutely act as a gatekeeper
And this is exactly the point. Because I can make fucking WP of all things load under 500kb. I work hard to try and optimize as best as possible. But because I will always refuse AMP, in this current environment, I'll never get organic top news treatment. So why try to?
And no joke. I don't trust AMP to optimize my page for me. I'll do it on my own TYVM
Thank you for being skeptical of this @AndroidPolice

I've read 3 articles already that just breathlessly praised the choice to obfuscate URLs

Have another good thread on this from over a year go.

Sorry to say Luke, you were right. It did only get worse

How can you avoid AMP?

Mostly by avoiding google on mobile.

That means not using Chrome. Not clicking the top stories on google. Paying attention to the URL bar and backing out of any AMP content you see.

This isn't much a deal on desktop either.
But if you use a non-chrome browser and just go use something like DuckDuckGo instead... you'll be a lot more guaranteed of being outside the AMP web.
