Man...nothing like having your Sudanese mother check you on the #SudanUprising
So I was talking to my mom about what’s happening in Sudan and this image came up. To put it mildly, she was not impressed. Here’s why:

The protests have been going on for the past 4 months, and during this time many have been either killed or jailed and tortured. Thing is, these protests have had women at the forefront leading them from the start.
As the army was going after the protesters the soldiers weren’t holding back and treating women differently. They got their share of beating as well. So when this image went viral as the “face of the uprising”, my mom went off and said:
“The face of the uprising is the woman that got picked up by the soldier and got slammed on the ground.”
“The face of the uprising is the woman who got picked up and taken to jail and had her hair shaved.”
“The face of the uprising is the woman who got picked up and taken to jail and had her hair shaved.”
“The face of the uprising is not a picture perfect image that you get when conditions are now relatively safer to have someone get up and recite a poem she didn’t even write herself then have western media celebrate it.”
That was like a mic drop moment. I wish I had more time on the phone with her but man, أمي كنداكة!
