Last night’s #ClimateChangeTheFacts was, on the whole, excellent. Finally, after a mere 30 years of asking, a strong, unflinching BBC film on our existential crisis. The science was laid out clearly and remorselessly. The footage was harrowing and astonishing.
Mirabile dictu, there was even a sequence about a political aspect: the denial industry, funded by fossil fuel companies to prevent action from being taken. I had given up hope of ever seeing that on a BBC documentary.
And it was brilliant to see @GretaThunberg laying out the case for protest so beautifully and inspiringly.
The summary of the technical solutions was pretty good, except for the incorrect claim by Chris Stark of the @theCCCuk that “the problem is not traditional farming techniques. The problem is with intensive farming.”
The carbon opportunity costs of “traditional” (extensive, low productivity) livestock keeping are vast. That’s unsurprising: the more land you use per kg of meat, the greater the emissions. nature.com/articles/s4158….
Missing from the programme was any mention of the structural economic drivers of #climatebreakdown, of which economic growth is the most obvious. Those brave technologies won’t take us very far if they involve running down a rising escalator.
Despite these issues, this represents a massive improvement in BBC environmental programme making. Let’s hope it continues.
