I'm up at 4:30am watching the full broadcast of the final round of the 1986 Masters in case anyone is wondering what I'm doing on my last day of vacation. 🤓⛳️
I'm struck by how little golf commentating has changed. With only minor technological advancements, it's basically the same thing as it was 30 years ago, which I really love.
I bought a final round ticket to the PGA Championship next month (nice little one-day road trip up to NY) and a final round ticket to the Open Championship, which I'm finding to be a bit of a headache as logistics go.

Y'all, that CBS commentary was in the works for a year. Almost every day, I made a mental note to check where we were, what could be done to make it happen, etc -- so much that just now, on vacation, I asked myself if I had called the producer this week yet for an update. 😅
It just makes me laugh the way immersive work rewires the brain like that. It's like my mind set an alarm clock along some neural pathway to ask every morning: "Is it done yet?"
Honestly, with how busy last week was, I don't think I gave myself and my colleagues a chance to really reflect on it. Now that it's finally done and it's settled in, I'm kind of amazed it actually happened.

We remember 20 years ago this week. I was in sixth grade at the time.

This is right as the internet was becoming ubiquitous but before cell phones and laptops were common among teens.

Before 9/11 and compounded existential dread. Back in some kind of national innocence.

These were the death bed years for the popularity of the trusted Big Nightly News Anchor and the first wisps of an increasingly convoluted and bad faith national discourse that had little arbitration or guidance.
The news spread slowly at first and then faster. And then, it was all anyone could talk about. For weeks, it was The Subject, and yet, for all the talking, nothing coming out of it as the "conventional wisdom" made any sense.

Everyone was on edge, and our leaders did nothing.

This came out my senior year of high school. I bought it for my then-girlfriend as a gift. Really fond memory, and the album has aged so well. It's maybe the critical-commercial peak of the indie/garage rock boom of the early 2000s.
I read somewhere that when the band was starting out they had a good number of songs written up, but after The Strokes released "Is This It", they were disgusted with their own material, feel it was crap, and scrapped all of it except for "Mr. Brightside". Neat anecdote.
