I volunteered at the SPCA for a decade, and honestly, irresponsible people who refuse to keep their cats indoors are far more responsible for the situation at our shelters than all the ethical breeders in the world.
I pivoted to cats from ethical breeders after the fifth cat in a row died from a genetic disorder we had no way of knowing they potentially carried. My peace of mind requires me to have 3+ generations of medical history before I adopt.
If we could talk about people having outdoor, non-working (so not barn or farm) cats with half the disgust we talk about ethical breeders, who devote their lives to improving the health and stability of their cats, we might actually change things.
Elsie and Thomas were not released into my custody until after they had been surgically sterilized. The rescue we got Meg from didn't bother to spay her, and didn't tell us she was intact. We found out when she went into heat.
My Maine Coons had no power to replicate themselves. My rescue cat came perfectly equipped to make four to eight additional cats before she was a year old. How is my breeder the unethical one here?
