I'm really enjoying how, no matter how many times I say "I worked for the SPCA, I have done rescue, I am aware of how bad the situation is in the shelters," people keep trying to "educate" me on the existence of rescue orgs and animal shelters.
I stopped posting pictures of my cats online for YEARS because of people emailing me to describe, in detail, how they were planning to murder them for the crime of being pedigreed and "stealing" a place from a "more deserving" rescue kitten.
The fact that my babies have never known suffering is not somehow a mark against them. The fact that other cats have suffered does not mean that my home came with "open space - three felines."
There was no way Elsie was going to be anything other than a Maine Coon. Why? Because I adopted her to help me through losing Alice, whose cancer was a "shit happens" thing, not a "purebred cat" thing. I would not have made it without Elsie.
And I NEEDED those predictable Maine Coon traits. She's a working cat. Her job is being a Maine Coon, for me. Very specialized therapy.
The solution, if there is a solution, is comprehensive education about spaying and neutering, feral TNR, and stricter fines for kitten and puppy mills and backyard breeders. Not being horrible to ethical breeders and the people who adopt from their (small, controlled) litters.
