The clash of the Orient and Occident. It must have seemed like meeting someone from Mars
In many of these very very early Indian-European encounters, I wonder how they even managed to talk to each other

Surely interpreters were almost non-existent

Gestures? How long it must have taken for either to learn the language!
I suspect in the mid-late 18th century, an Englishman was just as likely to learn the Indian language as an Indian pundit was to learn English

At some point in the 19th century, I suspect the latter instances became >>>> the former
