Tomorrow, Georgia plans to execute Scotty Morrow. This is yet another case where the jury did not have the whole story before recommending a death sentence. After hearing the truth, a majority of the trial jurors are now comfortable with a life sentence. Thread:
Scotty was exposed to violence, brutality, and sexual abuse throughout his entire childhood. The jury only heard a small part of that history. A Georgia appellate court ruled that "trial counsel failed to deliver on their promise to the jury" to explain Scotty's crime.
When Scotty was a toddler, he watched helplessly while his father brutally beat his mother over and over again. In one vicious attack, Scotty's father stomped on his pregnant mother's abdomen, causing her to miscarry. Scotty was 3 years old when he witnessed this violence.
Scotty was repeatedly raped by a family member when he was 7 years old. Scotty and his mother fled to this family member's home to escape his father's violence. The sexual assaults continued for a year until Scotty and his mother moved out.
Scotty and his mother soon moved to New York. Things got worse. When Scotty was 8 years old, he was again repeatedly raped by a different relative. Scotty was brutally beaten by his mother's boyfriend for 4 years. If Scotty cried, he was beaten harder.
The jury at Scotty's trial didn't know much about his horrifying history of childhood abuse and trauma. After learning the truth, a majority of the jurors are now comfortable with a life sentence instead of an execution. I'm urging the @GA_ParoleBoard to grant clemency.
