THREAD: 1) I’m seeing a tweet go viral by a pastor who is explaining why he is no longer a Christian. Faith is a personal journey, so I hope he keeps navigating it, but I wanted to tell a story on #whyImaChristian.
2) there are many stories. But here is the first major time I realized that not only is God real, He speaks to us and uses us to speak to other people.
3) I had a student that didn’t laugh at my jokes. This was unusual cause students always laugh at my jokes. She didn’t think I was cool. She didn’t think I was funny. She sat in the back and honestly didn’t participate.
4) One day she walks in my class & I hear a voice in my head say “give her the money in your wallet”. Now the voice sounded like my own voice, not the voice I would have imagined God to have. No thunder, no boom, just a whisper that sounded like my own thought.
5) I said no I’m not doing that. This is a secular school, & and I can’t just give students cash after class. Thats so inappropriate. I finished the lecture and I heard the voice again. Btw I only had $20.
6) everyone leaves and I hear in my head, “you ask me to trust you with big requests, and you couldn’t do this small one.” So I’m like dang God drag me. I start running around the parking lot looking for her and I can’t find her.
7) the next day is spring break. I go to Mexico for a wedding and I don’t think of this situation once. I come back to school a week later and the second she walks in class I hear it again, “give her the money in your wallet.” Btw this time I had $40 so God doubled it.
8) so after class I ask her to stay back. She thinks she’s in trouble cause we don’t chit chat like I do with other students. She looked super nervous.
9) I tell her this is awkward and inappropriate, but I am a Christian, and I felt God tell me to give her $40. I know it’s crazy, and not much money, and it’s not even from me, this is between her and Him.
10) she looks at me and gasps. She told me she is a single mom at 19. She lives in a shelter. She had asked her friend before my class if she had money for a box of diapers. The girl said let’s ask my dad.
11) the dad says he doesn’t have it. The friend asks her if they can pray for God to supply the money. My student hadn’t prayed in years. She had been sexually abused as a child by the foster family she was placed with. This is why she was now in a shelter.
12) she didn’t know if she believed in God anymore, but she prayed anyway, cause she needed diapers, and now here I was 2 hours later handing her $40.
13) to this day, I have a personal relationship with that student. Her daughter stays with my family when she needs a break. She has her own car now, job, and apartment. She goes to church, and I recently introduced her to another student, and they will probably get married.
14) this story is 6 yrs old. But it’s the first story that triggered so many others, because it taught me to listen to that voice. It taught me that God cares about diapers. And that we don’t have to be Christians or even like each other, for Him to swoop in when we ask for help.
15) I have many more stories. I’d honestly like you to share yours as well with this hashtag. But this was the first time I met God for myself. Not the God of my pastor or my parents. The God of Heather. The God of diapers. This is #whyImaChristian
