Everyone should be worried that AG Barr will authorize investigations against Donald Trump’s political enemies. Just think about the surveillance powers at his disposal. Section 702 of FISA allows warrantless searches of Americans’ communications.
Section 215 of FISA, which is up for reauthorization this year, has been used to collect hundreds of millions of phone records and an untold amount of other information on Americans.
In the hands of Trump and Barr, there is every reason to believe these vast troves of calls, emails, and other data will be abused.
In 2003, Barr publicly testified that if the president decides that national security is at stake, he can disregard the courts and Congress, and violate the law. I sounded the alarm on this when he was nominated: wyden.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/…
