TIL about the burakumin, Japanese outcasts traditionally considered to be 1/7th of a person, ignored by censuses, and both formally and informally discriminated against, inter-personally and systemically. Most Yakuza are are descended from burakumin.
Stigmatized as unclean, they were herded into ghettos, denied educations and professional advancement, and secret records of their names were passed between non-burakumin families to make certain no burakumin ever married into their houses.
