i think constantly about how the menu you get when you right click on the start button in windows 10 is a monument to catastrophe, an image that speaks volumes of engineers driven to the edge and bureaucracy devolved into bottom feeding creatures crawling blindly in the mud
i find everything about every other OS worse. i have experienced them all, for twenty years, and i still choose windows. that doesn't mean it hasn't lost its way just as much as GNOME and the Finder have.
i have watched linux struggle to emulate windows and macos alternately since 1997. i have watched apple cross their arms and refuse to admit that larry, john, steve and bruce didn't know the right way to navigate a computer my entire life. but windows has fallen so far.
windows 95 was perfect in a way almost nobody my age let alone any younger will ever understand, because all of the damage it acquired in 98 *created* the culture and society that now considers all that damage necessary and obvious
i was there before that damage happened. i saw what things looked like before windows 98 kicked off the chain of events that would lead to Electron. we were so close to heaven. we have fallen so far from grace.
microsoft is to blame. but i absolutely believe that until windows 8 they were closer to the truth than anyone else, even if they had lost their way. windows 8 was terrifying, and windows 10 was proof that they are now adversarial
they aren't just lost on the path. they're lost personally. nobody there knows what it means to create anything anymore. everyone is stumbling in the dark, repeating motions that once meant something but now mean nothing at all.
every MS employee i've talked to about this confirmed that the company is in abject chaos, that there *is* no process, no cohesion at all. managers, designers, programmers stumbling in the dark.
from what i've heard nobody can really explain how anything gets to market because things are so fractured and confused. you can see it in what gets released.
