As soon as the Electricity networks were sold off by State governments there was a rise in price of at least 30% because Businesses run for profit, whereas the government owners didn't. Someone said to me yesterday. Why don't we just (xxxxxxx) buy them back. (Expletive deleted).
When you look at claims by the Liberals that they are good with money, Electricity is one example where they are not. The sold assets (Generators) haven't had new investment in generation for years. (The State owned assets were continually upgrading them and self funded)
In Victoria in 1993 the SECV provided the 8th cheapest electricity in the OECD. They were paying off debts for infrastructure and also providing a substantial dividend to the State gov as well as having a substantial retained earnings fund.
The biggest mistake the Liberals and their followers the nationals made was (don't forget these people are self appointed financial geniuses) to not think about Electricity as a cost to business. Now it's a huge cost which makes them less competitive.
Just imagine if the Liberals and their follower mates the Nationals hadn't sold off the Electricity grid, how easy it would have been to transition properly to renewables. They could have designed and built Solar thermal power with molten Salt storage at the sites they owned.
