We probably can't just drone the unsubstantiated claim (likely invented out of whole cloth by True Pundit) that Hillary Clinton once asked "can't we just drone this guy?" about Julian Assange. We can (and did) analyze the propagation of the claim, however.

We began by downloading all tweets containing either the phrase "can't we just drone this guy" or the words "Hillary", "drone", and "Assange", resulting in 15635 original tweets (173052 including retweets) from 11018 accounts. Where'd this story get its start?
While tweets speculating/insinuating that Clinton or someone acting on her behalf might order a drone strike on Assange start popping up sporadically earlier, @Thomas1774Paine of True Pundit was the first to claim she actually proposed it. Tweet volume spiked almost immediately.

The spike of followers created at or around the same date as @AfilliSozlerTR definitely struck us as anomalous, and we've investigated similar spikes before. This raises a question: what's normal and what's not when it comes to an account's followers, anyway?

We plotted the creation dates of @AfilliSozlerTR's followers against the order in which they followed. The 2015 account creation spike manifests as a slightly darker horizontal band at the left end of the graph, and the pronounced curve at the top looks potentially interesting...
In order to get a better sense of how to interpret the results, we made the same plot for a total of 29 accounts in five categories.

- (mostly) friendly
- RWNJs
- banned IRA accounts
- BFFs (a network of pro-Putin/pro-Assad trolls)
- miscellaneous subjects of our past research

Some of the tweets copied by @akkitwts have also been cloned by other accounts, which in turn have tweeted tweets that have been cloned by yet more accounts. We could extend that sentence ad infinitum, but decided to stop there and analyze the accounts instead.

300 accounts have cloned some of the same tweets as @akkitwts, and they've copied other tweets as well. Of the 10 tweets most widely duplicated by these accounts, only one is political; the remainder are random "fun" tweets (sayings, captions of cute photos, etc.)
The repeated tweets in question come from three distinct groups of accounts, each of which tweeted a subset of the 10 copied tweets in question:

- Kennedy tweet
- cute photo tweets (animal/baby-related)
- aphorisms/sayings

Students found that, uh oh, it's HARD to find reliable sources on women in science! This didn't stop them, though. They pushed through and learned some new research skills.

Tycho's sister, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sophia_Br… was another article that needed work. The women who worked on this one had to find all sources on Tycho then sift through for the 2-3 pages about Sophia. Thank goodness for good #librarians at S&T who were patient and helpful!

After all, Wikipedia is "the free encyclopedia that anyone can edit"! Only that it's not that simple, of course. It's easy to become enthusiastic about contributing to Wikipedia, start editing, have some really frustrating encounters with other members of the community, and 2/n
then leave because who needs that kind of aggravation when they are just trying to volunteer for something? This thread is about how to do good things on Wikipedia and avoid at least some of the frustration-inducing pitfalls. 3/n
