Indeed. I’ll take Americans’ complains more seriously when they stop literally lining up to pay $1000 to put surveillance devices in their pockets and opting in to FB, facial recognition, fingerprint scanners, etc.
People mostly know what they’re getting into but they do it anyway because they want the convenience. Data is still abused and privacy violated, but most of it is willingly exchanged for services.
It’s a lot like diet. People know that fast food and candy are bad for them, but they still eat a lot anyway. (Cigarettes, too.) Digital devices and social media are even more addicting, so both individual willpower and regulation are needed.
