MINI-THREAD: Some parallels between Psa. 23 and the latter half of Mark 6.

Vs. 1a: ‘YHWH is my Shepherd’.

Jesus sees a lost multitude (‘sheep without a shepherd’) and decides to shepherd them (6.34).
Vs. 2a: ‘He makes me lie down in green pastures’ (בִּנְאוֹת דֶּשֶׁא יַרְבִּיצֵנִי).

Jesus sits/lies the people down (ἀνακλίνω) on a plain/pasture (ἔρημος) of ‘green grass’ (6.39).
Vs. 2b: The next three words of Psa. 23 read על מי מנחות = ‘beside still waters’. על has a gematrial value of 100 and מי has a value of 50.

Meanwhile, Jesus divides the people into 100s and 50s (6.40). Later on, he ‘stills’ the stormy waters of lake Galilee (6.51-52).
Vs. 1b: ‘I shall not want’. Vs. 5. ‘You prepare a table before me’.

Jesus feeds the people with bread and fish; they eat and are satisfied (6.41-42).

Vs. 5b: ‘My cup overflows’.

Twelve basket-fulls are left over (6.41-42).
I do not believe these allusions are coincidental. Jesus does in the Gospels what YHWH does in the Psalms.
Note: In the next Psalm, David instructs the people of Israel to live with ‘clean hands and a pure heart’.

Meanwhile, in the next chapter of Mark, Jesus asks the ‘clean-handed’ Pharisees (7.3-4) whether they really have ‘clean hearts’ (7.18-23).
