Hi @BeckerGOP. I read your op-ed in @Enquirer and it seems despite our email exchange, you still aren't comprehending how ectopic pregnancies, the practice of gynecology, or medical research work. I'll try to explain again.
cincinnati.com/story/opinion/…
Your bill is not "forward thinking," @BeckerGOP. It's regressive, anachronistic, and archaic. It uses century- and decades-old reports and ignores the thousands of studies we have on ectopic pregnancies, maternal mortality, and abortion. It patronizes providers & patients.
In your email you questioned why the procedure could be documented twice as successful, but be impossible in practice. Since you're not a doctor or researcher, you may not understand case reports (century-old ones) are the lowest quality medical evidence. I explained as much.
In fact, @BeckerGOP, the last case I could find in the literature of transplanting an ectopic pregnancy turned out to be a fraud. It is imperative that we practice medicine based on reputable evidence, not outdated hypotheses. bmj.com/content/310/69…
It seems, @BeckerGOP you don't understand the difference between lawmaking and supporting research. Codifying an unproven medical treatment into law is dangerous. If you want to encourage research on a topic, earmark funds for high-quality scientific studies.
Advocating for an unproven and potentially dangerous treatment in a law runs counter to the practice of evidence-based medicine. Pregnant patients should not be subjects for anti-abortion science experiments, particularly with the lack of accessible healthcare in this country.
Let me be clear: there is no evidence supporting the transplantation of an ectopic pregnancy into the uterus. None. Zero. A 100-year-old case report does not prove this is a thing.
In your second email, @BeckerGOP, you asked me for my "professional advice." I have given it to you. The fact that you are choosing to disregard it makes it clear that you have no intention to help ensure pregnancy is safer for Ohioans. I will not help you harm patients.
Insurance coverage for a procedure that doesn't exist is a bad idea. Patients should not be experimented on outside of controlled scientific research. What you are doing is unethical. You're not a doctor and haven't consulted and listened to doctors. Stay in your lane.
I am a researcher, an ob/gyn, and abortion provider. I will not assist you, @BeckerGOP, in writing medically unnecessary legislation to further restrict access. The best thing you can do for Ohioans is to not write abortion legislation. You are willfully unprepared to do so.
Patients have a difficult time accessing healthcare, particularly abortion. I suggest you write legislation to help Ohioans gain access to healthcare like prenatal care, doulas, higher Medicaid reimbursements, over-the-counter contraception, and yes, expanding access to abortion.
