For eight years, I have mostly bedbound, homebound or a wheelchair user. It has been a sometimes wonderful, but often unbelievably difficult journey. I wanted to share that thanks to three neurosurgeries, all of my ME symptoms are now in remission: medium.com/@jenbrea/healt…

#DisabledTwitter please consider watching Voices from the Shadows, a UK documentary about patients being forced into Dr. Sherry-style graded exercise programs. My community has been shouting about this abuse for years, largely into the void: vimeo.com/ondemand/22513 #mecfs
There is a free code to watch the film. It’s harrowing. Proceed with care if you are a victim of medical abuse. Some of the stories are too shocking to believe but I am sure those within the community will have no trouble believing them.
And if you were outraged by NPR’s coverage of a barbaric chronic pain treatment, please consider amplifying the voices of people with #mecfs who are still fighting coerced/forced treatment and forced institutionalization. It is all the same fight.

So many parallels to #pwme in Europe forced into graded exercise. Push people past their limits, then give a form of CBT to disabuse of them of the “false belief” that exertion is killing them. Here, put teens in pain in more pain and then forbid them from talking about pain.
Here is the original piece. This should always be a warning sign: “It mostly affects girls, though a small number of the cases are in boys” that we are about to see failure to diagnose lead to psychologization and medical abuse.
Doctor: “American medicine now routinely asks patients to rate their pain on a scale of 1 to 10, and treats it like an emergency, [this] has led to more pain in our society”

From the annals of things we used to know and completely forgot about. I just got tested for serum carnitine for the first time. I don’t know how this never happened before, but I was clearly deficient, am now taking levocarnitine and noticed immediate improvements.
Oh look, three studies from 1994-1995 on low serum carnitine in #mecfs: me-pedia.org/wiki/Carnitine Not enough science to start digging deeper and helping people feel better my ass @nihdirector.
Before we find “the biomarker” (how many diseases don’t have this and yet get on their merry way regardless) how about a consensus on what tests we should be running on everyone such that we can at least be symptomatically treating what is commonly and measurably wrong?

1. In 1965 SCOTUS held that the right of marital privacy was violated by states banning birth control. Eight years later the court ruled 7-2 in Roe v Wade that the privacy right encompassed abortion and the court used history and common law to fashion the three trimester rule.
2. Simply, in the first trimester the court held that the state interest in the fetus was low and should give way to the woman's privacy. Second trimester added a higher state interest and by the third trimester the state could ban it.
3. If the Court says that a state legislature has the right to ban abortions it follows that a state legislature has the power to legalize it. That is how it was before Roe. But if the state can legalize it, the Congress can too. We are giving way to much weight to the Court

Sometimes, when you have been reminded that your time on earth is finite, but you have no idea HOW finite - it is very hard to tell what is a waste of time and what is an uncomfortable but vital challenge.
It is sometimes hard to know what is worth getting exhausted for.
If there is anything still worth getting exhausted for.
If facing down resistance is always a bit exhausting. Or a sacred warning
signal to be respected rather than pushed past.
Hell if I know the answers.

I never have any. Only more questions.

I've known @JoeCrowleyNY for about a dozen years. There are few nicer, more decent and caring individuals I've met. He's an incredible champion for fixing our immigration system and has fought for criminal justice reform. He's really good at being a Member of Congress...
...and that isn't something I saw lightly. I'm thankful for what Joe is done. I'm thankful for what his team has done - many of whom are friends and doing incredible work as well. When I was a 24 year old DCCC staffer, he took me seriously; when I worked in the delegation...
he always helped. When I crashed call-time as an excuse to hit on the young woman staffing him, he tolerated it and now she's my wife and we have two kids. In 2013 and again this year he got arrested to fight for the rights of immigrants...

Three years ago, I went from a hugeco to a tinyco startup. The lessons I have learned on the way are many. Here are but a few of the ones that really mattered:
Cash is king: even the snazziest startup can't function without cash. In a hugeco, cash matters but it magically arrives from the corporate treasury. In a tinyco, it comes from customers or investors and getting it is unbelievably difficult.

Treat cash like the oxygen it is.
Talent is right next to cash: you now know that cash is oxygen but without the right people, even a cash rich startup is toast. Getting rid of the wrong (sometimes very otherwise capable) people is critical as is getting the right people on board.

Never compromise on talent.
