/ I wouldn't throw milkshake at Nigel Farage - but not primarily because I am a "good person" or effective political tactician, but because when people like him came to town in my teens we didn't even leave the house. I wouldn't even be within milkshake-throwing range.
/ My primary reaction when people throw milkshake over Farage is “bloody hell, I can’t believe you’re standing that close to someone like that.”
/ A lot of people in the UK are still very, very relaxed about the ideology that he represents. The reason I get worried about this stuff - and never shut up about it, I know - is that I go on some of the counter-protests, I see the kind of people who revere him. Dangerous man.
/ The milkshake-throwing: however you view it, it’s a tactic of opposition, right? When I was a teen, and the fascists came to West Drayton, we stayed indoors. Some might say that was weak, it was cowardice, that we gave them the street, that we emboldened them.
/ Can I ask you this, then? And I’m not asking you to throw milkshake. I am asking you this: what is your tactic of opposition? And I don’t mean merely voting - because elections come around every years (or months, these days). I mean: what are you doing in between?
/ What are you doing when Farage says Jews are a greater threat to the US than Russia? What are you doing when Farage says black people can’t integrate in Oldham? What are you doing when Tommy Robinson (not his government name) goes to Italy to pick fights with African refugees?
/ What do you do when you overhear racist comments in the workplace or the street, or at the dinner table? Why aren’t you speaking up? Why is your instinct to tell everybody to calm down, and then do nothing more?
/ I am just saying: I understand that many of you have a desire for a quiet life. I do too, believe it or not. But what is happening now is not normal. I know it and I think you know it too. Merely voting won’t do it. Contest these views, everywhere. Get vocal. Please. /end
