@CIJ_ICJ And now the UN General Assembly voted on a resolution setting a six-month deadline for UK withdrawal from the Chagos archipelago to reunite the island with Mauritius. The resolution passed 116 states for, 56 abstained, 6 against. theguardian.com/world/2019/may…
@CIJ_ICJ Who voted with the UK? The US (the US uses the archipelago for its base Diego Garcia, so no surprise), Israel (no surprise, see US), Australia, the Maldives and - Hungary.
@CIJ_ICJ So finally payback time from Hungary. The UK voted with Orbán when the EU tried to tackle his rule of law slideback.
@CIJ_ICJ How did EU nations vote? Mixed: Some abstained (France, Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal, Poland and Romania) Others voted against the UK (e.g. Austria, Greece, Ireland, Spain, Sweden). So no common Brexit line.
@CIJ_ICJ And of course: General Assembly resolutions are non-binding (no veto there either). So are Advisory Opinions - the procedure used before the Court of Justice. So political pressure, not legal pressure, even though the distinction is not really clear cut in PIL.
