The Internet Research Agency (IRA) used social media to provoke discord within the US, was based in St. Petersburg, Russia, and received funding from Russian oligarchs with ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin. (Putin NOT an ally to US)

The IRA switched from generally creating chaos and undermining US elections, to specifically supporting Trump.

Why?

The Russian operation not only supported Trump's campaign online with their "information warfare", they also made contact with Trump campaign officials.

So while Russia is attacking US, they are also talking to Trump campaign officials.

In addition to supporting Trump's campaign, the GRU (Russia's main intelligence service) is hacking democratic party computers and stealing information.

Remember, this is a new form of warfare that Russia is waging.

The Trump campaign knew that Russia had hacked emails that would hurt Clinton's campaign, but perhaps did not know exactly which emails had been hacked.

At this time, Trump publicly asks Russia to hack and release Clinton's emails.

Why?

Remember, Russia is NOT an ally of the USA. They are an adversary. In other words, an enemy. They do NOT want what is best for the USA.

Trump also lied about continuing negotiations for Trump Tower Moscow during his presidential campaign.

George Papadopoulos was Trump's Campaign foreign policy advisor. He met with a professor with links to Russia who told Papadopoulos that Russia had "dirt" on Clinton.

Papadopoulos told an agent of a US ally that he knew the Russian's were willing to help Trump win the election by releasing the "dirt" Russia had on Clinton. (The ally told the US govt, and this is what started the Russia investigation.)

Something that's always bothered me about how social media companies qualified the accounts they tagged as russian: The time frame they use is WAY to narrow. Most only use the half year leading up to the general election and the russians started in 2014.
