Michigan Auto Insurance Reform Thoughts:

I dont know how this bill addresses catastrophic claims. But, here's a story about how it works in real life:

I have a family member who was run off the road and left paralyzed from the chest down. /1
He had a successful career working for a large company, but was forced into retirement. He had built his life the way we tell people to: went to college, worked, got married, had 3 kids, saved for college, saved for retirement, and lived within his means.

/2
His life changed in an instant, through absolutely no fault of his own.

His auto-insurance covered his medical expenses, and the catastrophic claims fund handled his long term needs (which are significant, a decade later).

/3
Because of his coverage, he was able to keep his house, spend his college savings to put his kids through college, and retain some of what he built.

Without that coverage, he would have been forced to spend all of his assets before Medicaid/Soc Security picked it up.

/4
That means: through the fault of another driver (never identified) he could have lost everything he and his family built. His kids would have started adulthood with massive debt, and their kids would be leading vastly different lives.

/5
The number of folks in his position is relatively small. Politically insignificant. But their needs are real and important.

My relative could be any of us in an instant.

How does this "deal" protect him, his family, and people who will be in their position?

/6
I want the Michigan Legislature and Gov. Whitmer to explain that. Or, at least be candid if this new bill removes those protections.
