/ China & the theft of U.S. intellectual property is the theme in this short thread. We'll get to $TSLA in a moment, but begin with this important article in the excellent Exchange section of the weekend @WSJ: wsj.com/articles/huawe…
/ You cannot read this article and conclude other than that Huawei, along with many other Chinese companies, is involved in widespread theft of U.S. intellectual property. This is not the most important instance, but it's illustrative:
/ What's to be done? A difficult question. Don't miss this piece from @HolmanJenkins on the Opinion page, arguing that the optimal approach would have been to make Huawei so dependent on US commerce that proper behavior could have been incentivized. wsj.com/articles/how-t…
/ All of this brings me back to a two-post thread by @phoennix10 today, retweeting in turn a fascinating note by @ShortingIsFun:
/ How likely is it that $TSLA is milking U.S. vendors for designs, never intending to contract with those vendors, and instead determined to share the designs with Chinese vendors to get cheaper parts? Very likely.
/ Let's remember how Musk promised the Chinese Model 3s would be much less expensive. This kind of deceit is likely built into the $TSLA Shanghai business model.
/ It won't work. The poor quality U.S.-made Model 3 will be an even poorer quality version in China, assuming $TSLA lasts long enough to get its Shanghai factory up and running. But...
/ The is the greedy amorality that infects the entire $TSLA culture. To its narcissist egomaniac CEO, trickery & deceit are SOP. The tone is set at the top.
