In order not to be repulsed by this, you have to suppress every ounce of moral reason you have.
I have been against Joe Biden since at least the mid-’80s. Any conservative would be. But North Korea is a monstrous, murderous state. A perfect Communist tyranny. To join Kim Jong-un in cackling at Biden is abhorrent. No real American leader would do it.
There was once a famous book: “The Conscience of a Conservative.” No conservative of conscience could tolerate what Trump has done concerning Kim and Biden. No conservative of conscience could fail to be sickened.
Let’s face it: If a Democratic president did what Trump has done — joining a Communist dictator, and enemy of the United States, in trashing a domestic political opponent of the president’s — we conservatives would be at the White House gates, howling. And we would be right.
Republicans and conservatives used to mock and scorn American leaders who were credulous about Communist dictators and other enemies of freedom. That was a long time ago.
Nationalism is riding high these days — “America First” and all that. I think a little good old-fashioned American patriotism would be nice about now.
For many years, I railed against radical Democrats who clearly favored Fidel Castro against, say, Reagan. I’m no Biden man. But I’ll stand with him over Kim Jong-un. Even Charlie Rangel stood with George W. Bush when Hugo Chávez attacked Bush at the U.N.
