Great thread on the temple at Darasuram, near Kumbakonam

Kumbakonam is underrated among pilgrims. Many great shrines -

Darasuram
Sarangapani
Oppiliappan
Swamimalai
Rahu Sthalam (undervisited)
Nachiyar Koil
Adi Kumbeshwar

Among these shrines, I'd say the giant temple at Darasuram (discussed in the above thread) is perhaps least frequented by serious pilgrims

It is a touristy place

Temples like the one in Swamimalai or the Oppiliappan shrine easily beat it hands down
Sarangapani is perhaps the easiest to visit. Right in the middle of the city

For math enthusiasts, there is an additional pilgrimage a few blocks from Sarangapani temple - the house of Srinivasa Ramanujan, the place where he spent most of his childhood / adolescence

Some good points in this set of tweets

We often judge the reformists of early 19th century for being too "defensive"

But the reality is - they had a lot of good reasons to be defensive

The understanding that we have of Indian intellectual history hardly existed back then
For e.g. Today Arthashastra is regarded widely as one of the great classics of Indian thought

But in 1800, Arthashastra was barely known. It was known through secondary sources. But the text itself was lost

Until it was discovered in early 1900s in Mysore
Another e.g. We wax eloquent on Kerala school of mathematics today

BUt the reality is - the tradition was sustained by a few Namboothiri families in Kerala. There was no dissemination. Very few even in neighboring provinces were aware of Achyuta Pisharati or Jyeshtadeva

In the decade leading up to Sati's abolition (1815 - 29), 5 in 6 Sati cases in India were recorded in Bengal

Why this concentration in Bengal?

Perhaps Dāyabhāga inheritance law (strong in Bengal) played a role, wherein the widow inherited husband's property rights
The relative liberal position w.r.t. widow's property rights in Dayabhaga is also mentioned in Anant Sadashiv Altekar's fine historical survey of women in Indian society.

He also adds that Dayabhaga perhaps was not an unmixed blessing to the women of Bengal, and maybe it contributed to the abuse of Sati pratha

The problem is not with Rahul Gandhi's articulation or choice of words

In fact his communication has improved a great deal relative to 2013

The problem was - he was wrong. Modi wasn't a Chor. And people knew it!
To my mind this is something the liberal crowd is not willing to acknowledge

They grudgingly attribute the loss to RG's poor leadership

As though fixing RG would have toppled Modi
But this election was not about RG. It was about Modi

One can quibble a lot about Modi's policies

But nobody was willing to believe he could be corrupt. Because he isn't.

So RG had the wrong line of attack

Dharmashasta manifested Himself in various forms - as Aiyyanar, as Ayyappan, and as Himself. Prince Manikantan of Pandalam (Sabarimala Ayyappan) was the specific avatar He took to kill Mahishi.
3. So while Dharmashasta finds a mention in the Puranas, it is unlikely that Ayyappa would also be mentioned as Ayyappa’s birth happened many years after the Puranas were composed.

The musical steps in Airavatesvara temple, Dharasuram is one of the great mysteries of all time. This Lord Shiva temple is said to be built by Rajaraja Chola II in the 12th century CE.
This temple is located near Kumbakonam, in Tamil Nadu, India and recognized as UNESCO World Heritage monument. The entrance of the temple has steps made of stones, which produces seven different sounds on tapping. One can hear all the seven swaras at different points.
