Global warming is contributing to "polar bear invasions" in the Russian Arctic. In Amderma they have a polar bear patrol to drive them off: “They used to go on the ice to hunt seals. Now there's no ice...they go along the shore, and the town is in the way”

Severodvinsk missile test explosion yesterday looks more radioactive than we'd thought, as drivers in hazmat suits brought victims to Moscow hospital & nuclear waste tanker came to test site. This comes only days after we toured Russia's "invincible" floating nuclear power plant!
This is the satellite image reportedly showing the Serebryanka nuclear waste cleanup and storage tanker arriving at the site of yesterday's missile test explosion. @ArmsControlWonk thinks it might have been the Burevestnik nuclear-powered cruise missile Putin announced last year

Academic Lomonosov is basically a huge nuclear barge that'll be towed 3000 miles to replace nuclear plant near the gold-mining town of Pevek. Why didn't Rosatom just build another plant onshore or retrofit an icebreaker (& save $)? For one that wouldn't get as much publicity 2/10
Its 2 uranium-fueled reactors can power a city of 100,000. Rosatom wouldn't show us the reactors, but this is the control room. Rostekhnadzor complained it wasn't allowed to check on construction regularly—then gave the plant an operating license anyway. 3/10

The Russian journos wanted to go east to Bambari but their driver, a former gendarme, took them north where they were ambushed, beaten & shot. Who found the driver? "Martin," the mysterious fixer recommended by an employee of FAN (owned by Prigozhin, whom they were investigating)
The gendarme following the journos, Emmanuel Kotofio, quickly arrived at the murder site "with 3 Europeans" but left the bodies. He had been frequently calling a deputy of Zakharov, the Russian security advisor to CAR's president. He reportedly got a promotion after their killing

In our future #climate simulations the region in western #Greenland that includes #Kangerlussuaq from the #icesheet to the shores of the #DavisStrait we show how melt + runoff of early 2000s was outpacing mid-century projections*

*Caveat: only one GCM #ECEARTH shown here
The more extreme the scenario - the more extreme the projected melting, but note the very high interannual variability.

Steeling myself with a strong coffee to sit down and read major new report on avoiding dangerous #climatechange (@IPCC_CH #SR15, available here: ipcc.ch/report/sr15/). My takes to follow (1/n)
As always, the #peerreview effort by @IPCC_CH is Herculean. A couple hundred volunteer scientists read & cited 6,000+ studies to support conclusions w/ evidence. Responded to 42,001 comments in 3 rounds of review. The most robust process there is to establish scientific consensus
Now, this #SR15 report title is descriptive, but doesn't exactly roll off the tongue...
