Here’s a little history lesson for everybody who keeps claiming that integration of women into the armed forces was a “social experiment” externally imposed by civilian feminazis who never served. (Note: not this OP, but some of the commenters.) Thread. 1/
Formal integration of women into the armed forces began with the establishment of a contract corps of professional & volunteer nurses supporting the Army during the Civil War. The women themselves chose to serve: every single one was a volunteer who said, “I can.” 1/
The contract nurses were so successful that their service was requested in the Spanish-American War. In a postwar congressional hearing in which Army surgeons were excoriated for poor performance of medicine, the nurses were lauded for professionalism & saving lives. 2/

Remembering this incident helps to stay my hand when I have the urge (as we all sometimes do) to gratuitously & self-righteously mean-tweet. The writer being bashed here was in a novel workshop I took a few years ago. 1/
She was intelligent, enthusiastic, kind, & working her ass off to bring her novel into the world. She spent hours of her free time encouraging other writers in their work. Then, one morning, she did a thoughtless and racist thing with a mean-tweet. 2/
The tweet was indefensible. It was punching down. It jeopardized another person’s livelihood. I don’t know if the writer was aware of that, or what her state of mind was; I had to drop out of the workshop group a couple of years back, & haven’t been in touch. 3/

A sea story thread. When I served on USS Mount Whitney (LCC-20), female officer berthing was directly below the fo’c’sle—a space where the anchor chains & capstans are located, “owned” by the boatswain’s mates (aka “Deck Apes). 1/ taskandpurpose.com/hidden-camera-…
One night, as I lay in the upper berth staring at the overhead (ceiling) and pondering the Great Mysteries of Life, as one is wont to do at sea, I noticed a pinprick of light. I slipped out of my rack, dressed, & went up to the next deck. 2/
Sure enough, someone had left the lights on in the fo’c’sle. The frames of a ship are numbered, forward to aft, & I was able to locate the section of deck in the fo’c’sle directly over my stateroom. And the 3/16” peephole that some enterprising boatswain’s mate had drilled— 3/

Memory loss is a major symptom of depression, and in fact of MANY mental illnesses and disorders.

This is because your cognitive processes are impaired - ie your processing speed is slow or faulty - and the brain is unable to store things correctly.
With depression in particular this is partly down to difficulty in differentiating between similar experiences.

Think about how often when severely depressed, your brain tells you that you have ALWAYS felt as depressed and terrible as you do at that moment.
Depression not only affects your short term memory (and in turn over time your long term memory of the period in which you were depressed)

it also corrupts your memory to convince you that you have ALWAYS felt the way you feel right now.

I just had an epiphany: #beautiful has become my new favorite word. That may seem strange given my circumstances. In June 2017 I was diagnosed with incurable stage IV #lungcancer.
I naively thought that maybe my lifetime of being a health and fitness junkie would insulate me from such a medical fate. Wrong. And So here I am, fifty-one years old and not sure how much time I have left on earth. I know I could, or maybe should, feel angry, cheated, jaded.
But I don't. I have this epiphany that my new favorite word is beautiful and I'm not sure why. There is nothing beautiful about what I've gone through since my diagnosis--lots of physical and emotional distress to be sure. But yet, I keep find
