Since 2017 the #GRNPP team has worked with partners in Myanmar and Ethiopia to discuss and imagine what democratic politics might look like in a more engaged and inclusive political world.
Our approach is based on the creation and maintenance of strong and enduring networks. Skype is nice but nothing beats meeting face-to-face. But we recognise that travel comes at a cost.
Over the lifetime of the #P4P project, we calculate that our core team's int'l air travel alone will cause over 85 tonnes of C02 emissions. This doesn't include long-haul flights taken by our Co-Is, partners & advisory panel, or travel within Europe, Ethiopia and Myanmar.
We are funded by the @GCRF which aims to support cutting-edge research that addresses the challenges faced by developing countries. Sustainable Development Goal 13 calls for urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts sustainabledevelopment.un.org/sdg13
Recognising that the costs of #ClimateBreakdown impact most heavily on those least able to bear them, we at GRNPP are committed to doing all we can to significantly reduce our carbon footprint.
For us this will mean: minimising international conferences; relying on video-conferencing (though importantly we recognise that not everyone has the technology); going paperless as/when possible; actively looking for ways to recycle...
.... minimising car and taxi use; and finding alternatives to domestic flights when it is safe to do so (buses and trains are more interesting!)
We will take fewer long-haul flights and plan to stay for longer - this will give us more time working with our partners in Myanmar & Ethiopia; more time to learn, to immerse ourselves in the rhythms of daily life, and to deepen our understanding & r/ships with our #P4PGrantees
When we do fly, we will commit to offsetting the cost through schemes such as climatecare.org.
