Great stuff on responding to students essays like a "human" from @a2matthew that also models how to use blogging as a tool for reflective teaching practice. I find this practice invaluable myself. matthewmjohnson.com/2019/05/28/a-m…
The shift to responding to student writing as you would any other piece of writing, where you expect to be interested and engaged, is difficult when you've spent so much time believing your job is to monitor their correctness, but IMO, it's worth it.
By leading with my "human" response to student writing I'm signaling what I actually do value most in writing, the presentation of the work of a unique intelligence. Starting with what I value makes it easier to move towards helping students realize those virtues in their work.
Student writing is like all writing, it benefits from other perspectives that help hone the communication. If I start with that goal in mind, I'm not spending my time correcting errors. I'm spending my time redirecting students towards the goal we share. They own it.
And as @a2matthew shows in his post, it doesn't take much to get started with responding like a human. It'll improve the instructor's mood as well once you stop spending so much time cataloging mistakes.
