When the British came to India, there was already stratification that was deep entrenched elsewhere in the world including in Britain.

House of Lords, started in 14th century CE, is one of the examples for stratification & division in Britain. The House of Lords was started as a separate chamber of Parliament of Britain, with a role of,
•Revising Legislation
•Acting as a check on Gov.
•Final Court of appeal

Despite Britain being oldest democracy, House of Lords was made of unelected members with no upper limit on d no. of members. Its composition then was
•26 Archbishops & Bishops
•543 Life Peers including Law Lords
•90 elected Hereditary Peers
•2 Hereditary Royal Office Holders

Further, like the Jati system in India, where each Jati represents the vocation or guild of the person, surnames were also given in England according to profession such as,

There was a distinct social hierarchy in England based on these surnames.

If Krishna has propounded the 4 division based Varna system in India, it was St. Thomas Aquinas, in Europe, in 13th century CE, who 1st described Great Chain of people who held up the world together

Only, it was not just 4 divisions but a list of about 20 divisions.
This was the caste system for Europe in the 1200s CE.

Gypsies – The Dalits of the European Continent
If we look at the Great Chain of St.Thomas Aquinas, we find that the Gypsies were listed at the bottom. They veritably were the untouchables, the Dalits of Europe.

Gypsies formed about 8 million of the population of the European continent. They were spread mainly in the South, East and Central Europe. Lakhs of Gypsies were exterminated enmasse by Hitler during the World War II.

Who were the Gypsies and why did they figure at the bottom of the list even after Thieves and Pirates?
The Gypsies of Europe mainly came from the musician community of pre-medieval India.
Dr.A.L.Basham, in his book, “The Wonder That Was India”, writes that

While much has been said and done, with respect to the Dalits of India, not enough has been written or done about the source, the travel and travails of the Gypsies of Europe who were literally the Dalits of the European Continent.

Europe was ready to hurl stones on India to make a case out of the untouchables of India, who came into existence due to the very own actions & policies of the British in India. However, they did nothing for Gypsies who were branded & burnt as untouchables in their own homeland.
