Huh. The Times public editor should probably weigh in on this one, seems pretty weird.
I do not actually know offhand what this development means for the story, and it would be good for an independent reporter within the Times to be empowered to find out and for the story's co-author and editors to feel as if they had to answer those questions.
Anyway when the Times killed the public editor position they said "our followers on social media ... have come together to collectively serve as a modern watchdog" to replace it, so presumably the Times journalists will generously answer questions about it here.

I'm gay and gradually growing to hate the rainbow flag. I'm all for gay equality & love all people, but don't like seeing these issues used as a subversive *political* vehicle. This movement has fetishized liberationism to the point of absurdity, at great social cost. #PrideMonth
Example: I used to see church banners with rainbow flags as a symbol of welcoming. "I'd be welcome here, thank you" I would think. Now I see them as emblems of a political ideology and agenda that feels anathema to the public good and my own values. It's a complex feeling.

According to the article, filings for 2017 show that the @NRA paid its PR and marketing firm, Ackerman McQueen, and the firm’s affiliates more than $40M dollars THAT YEAR. Ackerman - not the NRA - employs Dana Loesch and pays her $1M annually. (Wayne LaPierre made $5M in 2015).
A former IRS official on the @NRA’s tax records: “The materials reflect one of the broadest arrays of likely transgressions I’ve ever seen. There ... appears to be the misuse of assets for the benefit of certain venders and people in control.”
