Huh. The Times public editor should probably weigh in on this one, seems pretty weird.
I do not actually know offhand what this development means for the story, and it would be good for an independent reporter within the Times to be empowered to find out and for the story's co-author and editors to feel as if they had to answer those questions.
Anyway when the Times killed the public editor position they said "our followers on social media ... have come together to collectively serve as a modern watchdog" to replace it, so presumably the Times journalists will generously answer questions about it here.
